"Legend Has It"

As featured in the trailer for Marvel's Black Panther movie.

Is the first video from RTJ's hit album, RTJ3, which debuted at #1 on Billboard's Rap, Hip Hop/R&B, Indie & Physical charts.

Director: Brian Beletic
Producer: Terry Gallagher, Dennis Beier
Executive Producer: Drew Santarsiero
Production Company: SMUGGLER
DP: Ryley Brown
Production Designer: David Skinner
Costume: Lindy McMichael, Matt Goldman
Assistant Director: George Nessis
Editor: Sam Ostrove
VFX - Autonomous, Andy Bate

Conceived by Brian Beletic & El-P
Executive Producers (Run the Jewels) - Amaechi Uzoigwe & Drew Santarsiero
Thanks to Jason DeMarco/Adult Swim.

Artist & Director's statement:

The video for LEGEND HAS IT plays with the theme of guilty until proven innocent. We live in a world where stronger the truth the greater the opposition. In this story EL-P and Killer Mike are in a police lineup and the cards are stacked heavily against them.

But why is that?

this video is a worst nightmare scenario. high on acid and caught in the system. pitted against icons of innocence in a police line up that doesn't feel real. no bunnies were hurt on the making of this video.

Lyrics:

Aww, comin through fo' real we Cypress Hill, ohh baby
Got that crunk, for yo' trunk, goin gangsta crazy
We some real life hustlers, playin games in the street
We got that low-ri-der, scrapin dippin on three (low-ri-der)
So pop your collar, give a holla, throw yo' dubs in the air
We tear the roof, off the mother, lady let down yo' hair
Playa do that thang, that make you feel alright (low-ri-der)
Smoke that tree, crack that brew, we gettin freaky tonight

Aww, comin through fo' real we Cypress Hill, ohh baby

Jan. 24, 2018 | Abby O'Neill -- The rhythm of family has been a constant thread throughout P-Funk's long lineage and the myriad iterations the band has undergone in its 50-plus years. From The Parliaments to Funkadelic to Parliament Funkadelic to the P-Funk All Stars, George Clinton has conducted the mothership as a reliable father figure. When he commands you to "put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip, and come on up to the Mothership," he's presenting to you the first law of Funktonian physics. We at NPR pledged our groovellegiance when he and his P-Funk All Stars touched down to bless the Tiny Desk.

Clinton has brought his own bloodline into the most recent lineup of P-Funk: His grandchildren are the newest backup singers, while another grandchild serves as tour manager. Though this was a much smaller outfit than their traditional stage shows โ€” no horn section, no dancers, no Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk โ€” the extended family was also in full effect. Garrett Shider on rhythm guitar, filling in for his late father, Garry Shider, aka Starchild. Even original trumpeter Bennie Cowan, who still tours with the group but didn't make it to the Tiny Desk, typically plays alongside his son Benzel on drums. Blackbyrd McKnight and Lige Curry cement the foundation as elder statesmen who've been rocking with Clinton since 1978.

Indeed, the funk father refuses to let the musicianship slip โ€” the band was as sonically tight as ever, blessing us with a canonical three-song set list of classic jams. P-Funk's influence shaped '90s hip-hop and culture immeasurably; without Clinton, we'd have no NWA, no G-funk, no Tupac, no EPMD, no Ice Cube... and, of course, no one's forgotten about Dre. Clinton and P-Funk brought world class funksmanship, and it was our pleasure to air the room out and squeegee the floors after soaking up their cosmic slop.

Set List

"Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On"

"One Nation Under A Groove"

"Give up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)"

MUSICIANS

George Clinton (lead vocals), Dwayne Blackbyrd McKnight (guitar), Lige Curry (bass), Garrett Shider (guitar), Danny Bedrosian (keyboard), Benzel Cowan (drums), Tonysha Nelson (backup vocals), Patavian Lewis (backup vocals), Tairee Parks (backup vocals)

Aug. 6, 2018 | Bobby Carter -- There was a shift in Mac Miller's boisterous demeanor as he started the third of his three-song Tiny Desk set. It's the first time he's performed tracks from his new album, Swimming, in front of an audience. On "2009," he rubbed his chin with clinched eyes, looking like a young man who's beginning to crack the code. Backed by a piano loop and a string quartet, he reflected on his journey's peaks and valleys thus far.

I ain't asking why no more
I know I'll take it if it's mine
I don't stay inside the lines
It ain't 2009 no more
Yeah, I know what's behind that door

With nearly a decade under his belt at 26 years old, these words ring like an artist twice his age.

We were introduced to Mac Miller via 2011's XXL Freshman Class, which featured a special crop of MCs such as Kendrick Lamar, Meek Mill and YG, all of whom are now considered in the upper echelon of hip-hop. After his big splash, he's been able to find a groove and consistently release quality rap records, ultimately keeping his name in the conversation with the other young greats. His 2011 album, Blue Slide Park, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the first independently distributed debut album to do so since 1995's Dogg Food by Tha Dogg Pound. These consecutive triumphs amassed plenty of fame, fortune and insurmountable obstacles, causing a stumble here and there. Throughout the years, however, Mac has brushed himself off and put it in the music.

For this performance, Mac Miller invited frequent collaborator Thundercat, who graced the Tiny Desk last year and will join Mac on tour this fall. Thundercat put on a dazzling shaker routine and played the deep centerpiece bass line on "What's The Use?" These Swimming iterations don't veer far away from the recorded versions, but here, his lyrics seem easier to interpret under live instrumentation.

Set List
"Small Worlds"
"What's the Use? (Feat. Thundercat)"
"2009"

Musicians
Mac Miller (Vocals), Thundercat (Bass), Justus West (Guitar), Klynik (Keys), Joe Cleveland (Bass), Kendall Lewis (Drums), Robin Fay-Massie (Violin), YaShauna Swan (2nd Violin), Lelia Walker (Viola), Melanie Hsu (Cello)

Feb. 19, 2018 | Abby O'Neill -- One of the greatest to ever bless the mic, Big Daddy Kane treated Tiny Desk to an office block party in the true essence of hip-hop. He performed a short set of classics, including "Smooth Operator," "Ain't No Half Steppin'," "Raw" and a bonus freestyle. Through his warm, engaging and devilishly self-effacing style, the pioneer used an interlude between songs to address the intergenerational divisiveness defining rap today and the importance of fans of all ages supporting whatever they like, while "focusing on what's positive and keeping that in the spotlight."

Kane, aka Dark Gable, was a breakout member of the seminal Juice Crew in hip-hop's golden era during the latter part of the 1980s. He popularized quick-cadence flows and multisyllabic rhyme schemes before passing the torch to early mentees like Jay-Z. Many a night during my adolescence was spent trying to memorize the baritone MC's lyrics. During those sessions, I could only feel sympathy for the subpar MCs who fell victim to the "Wrath of Kane."

The smooth operator, Big Daddy Kane, still emits that same palpable swag he did as a lyrical heartthrob during his heyday. He strides into the room and fully commands it with his presence. And now that hip-hop is the most popular genre, with its biggest stars wielding global influence, it's important to us here at Tiny Desk to continue to make room for the legends who laid the foundation before the whole world became hip. Long live the Kane.

The Flatbush Zombies are raking in the dough from their debut album 3001: A Laced Odyssey, released earlier this month. HNHH caught up with the rambunctious trio of Erick the Architect, Meechy Darko, & Zombie Juice down at SXSW to talk about the making of the album as well as their love of Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey", NYC rapper camaraderie ("camaraderie is very important"), and assorted other topics.

Erick the Architect explained how he got in touch with comic book artist David Nakayama, who designed the exceptionally ill cover art for 3001: A Laced Odyssey, and discussed how the Zombies approached their debut album differently than they would have a mixtape. "We approached this with intent to change and basically reestablish that we're psychedelic hip hop artists," he said. "Like we're new to the world, but we been doing this. It's not like that changed much, it's more like, we'll tell you again who we are and why we do this shit."

Erick went on to discuss his beatmaking process and why they kept production in house for the entirety of the album. "It was important for me to do the whole first album just because I've been producing for us this whole time, I didn't see why we had to go get somebody else. This is all me, baby! You don't need nobody else, that's how I feel," he told us."

The Zombies live together in a house on Brooklyn, and Meechy Darko shed some insight into the ways in which Flatbush Zombies work together in that environment. "Sometimes I don't want to see him make the whole beat," Meechy said of Erick. "Sometimes I just want to see the sample that he's cutting and come back five hours later. Depends. Sometimes it's good for a guy to make this shit alone and have no distractions, I'm farting and coughing in the background."
