Jan. 24, 2018 | Abby O'Neill -- The rhythm of family has been a constant thread throughout P-Funk's long lineage and the myriad iterations the band has undergone in its 50-plus years. From The Parliaments to Funkadelic to Parliament Funkadelic to the P-Funk All Stars, George Clinton has conducted the mothership as a reliable father figure. When he commands you to "put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip, and come on up to the Mothership," he's presenting to you the first law of Funktonian physics. We at NPR pledged our groovellegiance when he and his P-Funk All Stars touched down to bless the Tiny Desk.
Clinton has brought his own bloodline into the most recent lineup of P-Funk: His grandchildren are the newest backup singers, while another grandchild serves as tour manager. Though this was a much smaller outfit than their traditional stage shows — no horn section, no dancers, no Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk — the extended family was also in full effect. Garrett Shider on rhythm guitar, filling in for his late father, Garry Shider, aka Starchild. Even original trumpeter Bennie Cowan, who still tours with the group but didn't make it to the Tiny Desk, typically plays alongside his son Benzel on drums. Blackbyrd McKnight and Lige Curry cement the foundation as elder statesmen who've been rocking with Clinton since 1978.
Indeed, the funk father refuses to let the musicianship slip — the band was as sonically tight as ever, blessing us with a canonical three-song set list of classic jams. P-Funk's influence shaped '90s hip-hop and culture immeasurably; without Clinton, we'd have no NWA, no G-funk, no Tupac, no EPMD, no Ice Cube... and, of course, no one's forgotten about Dre. Clinton and P-Funk brought world class funksmanship, and it was our pleasure to air the room out and squeegee the floors after soaking up their cosmic slop.
Set List
"Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On"
"One Nation Under A Groove"
"Give up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)"

The Flatbush Zombies are raking in the dough from their debut album 3001: A Laced Odyssey, released earlier this month. HNHH caught up with the rambunctious trio of Erick the Architect, Meechy Darko, & Zombie Juice down at SXSW to talk about the making of the album as well as their love of Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey", NYC rapper camaraderie ("camaraderie is very important"), and assorted other topics.
Erick the Architect explained how he got in touch with comic book artist David Nakayama, who designed the exceptionally ill cover art for 3001: A Laced Odyssey, and discussed how the Zombies approached their debut album differently than they would have a mixtape. "We approached this with intent to change and basically reestablish that we're psychedelic hip hop artists," he said. "Like we're new to the world, but we been doing this. It's not like that changed much, it's more like, we'll tell you again who we are and why we do this shit."
Erick went on to discuss his beatmaking process and why they kept production in house for the entirety of the album. "It was important for me to do the whole first album just because I've been producing for us this whole time, I didn't see why we had to go get somebody else. This is all me, baby! You don't need nobody else, that's how I feel," he told us."
The Zombies live together in a house on Brooklyn, and Meechy Darko shed some insight into the ways in which Flatbush Zombies work together in that environment. "Sometimes I don't want to see him make the whole beat," Meechy said of Erick. "Sometimes I just want to see the sample that he's cutting and come back five hours later. Depends. Sometimes it's good for a guy to make this shit alone and have no distractions, I'm farting and coughing in the background."

pičke di je after jeste čuli ajme meni
marka lipa fening cenat funta grami deki
maraschino malo pivo chivas johnny jackie
veni vicci vidi popij nešto sidi jidi
mikrofon i sluje dimika u klimi
šta to tamo klapa brate koliko imaš rama
stalno šapće đava konstantno nam biži škvara
krokodila je puno split nam je premala bara
pucam štrapam uz to vučem dimove ka napa (gorenje)
oči cakle mrma u vodu se kapa
[Vojko V]
svaki vikend svi smo našikani izvan uma
u centrala stalno upadamo priko kuma
kada smo u gasu počnemo svi fufljat masu
ljudi glume da razume kad im bacim bazu
za započet feštu razlozi nam nisu bitni
svako malo oproštajna niko ne ide nigdi
dođemo na after prazni džepovi se vade
stolicu do kompjutera preuzmemo odmah
puštamo ti cajke sataremo sve u mozak
s aftera ti brzo potiram sve ženske mlade
kad im pustim "siso lažljiva" od sexy sandre
sa tri banke bančimo do tri popodne
kad je rođendan ka dica žderemo bombone
viski kad poteče postanemo ljudsko smeće
parica od nastupa nam plane istu večer
svaku nedilju u tupilu sam jako teškom
moram prestat družit se sa žuvijem i krešom
