Feb. 19, 2018 | Abby O'Neill -- One of the greatest to ever bless the mic, Big Daddy Kane treated Tiny Desk to an office block party in the true essence of hip-hop. He performed a short set of classics, including "Smooth Operator," "Ain't No Half Steppin'," "Raw" and a bonus freestyle. Through his warm, engaging and devilishly self-effacing style, the pioneer used an interlude between songs to address the intergenerational divisiveness defining rap today and the importance of fans of all ages supporting whatever they like, while "focusing on what's positive and keeping that in the spotlight."

Kane, aka Dark Gable, was a breakout member of the seminal Juice Crew in hip-hop's golden era during the latter part of the 1980s. He popularized quick-cadence flows and multisyllabic rhyme schemes before passing the torch to early mentees like Jay-Z. Many a night during my adolescence was spent trying to memorize the baritone MC's lyrics. During those sessions, I could only feel sympathy for the subpar MCs who fell victim to the "Wrath of Kane."

The smooth operator, Big Daddy Kane, still emits that same palpable swag he did as a lyrical heartthrob during his heyday. He strides into the room and fully commands it with his presence. And now that hip-hop is the most popular genre, with its biggest stars wielding global influence, it's important to us here at Tiny Desk to continue to make room for the legends who laid the foundation before the whole world became hip. Long live the Kane.

SET LIST
• "Raw"

• "Smooth Operator"

• "Ain't No Half Steppin"

• "Freestyle"

Antonio Hardy, Matt Lambert, Benjamin Geis, Judson Nelson, John Williams

Last July, Jordan Brand released one the last Air Jordan 3s of the foreseeable future, in the form of a 'Wolf Grey' colorway.
On paper, it sounds like a great idea. However, as I found out, the execution was sub-par at best and they've been sitting in my closet for over a year now.
Sometimes, the sneakers just look better through a computer screen than they do when you have the physical product and if you've ever regretted a sneaker purchase you can relate to my story.
I thought the white inner lining looked off, the tongue should've been a smooth leather like the 'Infrared 23' pair, and don't get me started on that nauseating metallic elephant print.
The first thing that came to mind when I held the sneaker in my hand, before I vomited, was that they used a shredded Capri Sun pouch and glue to construct the iconic elephant print.
Knowing that Jordan Brand is putting the 3s back in the vault for quite some time, I was supremely disappointed with this product. A storied sneaker with as much history as the Air Jordan 3 deserves better.

At this point of Adidas x Kanye's relationship, it's obvious that every collab they put out will sell out immediately. And the same goes for the Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Zebra (one hell of a long name). The Zebra (will keep it short) restock went on sale this past Saturday for $220 and are already on the market (aka eBay) for $500+. People move fast!

Well, whether you don't mind buying them at double the price or still need a little push, HNHH has a review of the Zebras for you. Check it out above!

The Flatbush Zombies are raking in the dough from their debut album 3001: A Laced Odyssey, released earlier this month. HNHH caught up with the rambunctious trio of Erick the Architect, Meechy Darko, & Zombie Juice down at SXSW to talk about the making of the album as well as their love of Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey", NYC rapper camaraderie ("camaraderie is very important"), and assorted other topics.

Erick the Architect explained how he got in touch with comic book artist David Nakayama, who designed the exceptionally ill cover art for 3001: A Laced Odyssey, and discussed how the Zombies approached their debut album differently than they would have a mixtape. "We approached this with intent to change and basically reestablish that we're psychedelic hip hop artists," he said. "Like we're new to the world, but we been doing this. It's not like that changed much, it's more like, we'll tell you again who we are and why we do this shit."

Erick went on to discuss his beatmaking process and why they kept production in house for the entirety of the album. "It was important for me to do the whole first album just because I've been producing for us this whole time, I didn't see why we had to go get somebody else. This is all me, baby! You don't need nobody else, that's how I feel," he told us."

The Zombies live together in a house on Brooklyn, and Meechy Darko shed some insight into the ways in which Flatbush Zombies work together in that environment. "Sometimes I don't want to see him make the whole beat," Meechy said of Erick. "Sometimes I just want to see the sample that he's cutting and come back five hours later. Depends. Sometimes it's good for a guy to make this shit alone and have no distractions, I'm farting and coughing in the background."

Not only is Rob $tone the smiliest rapper on the planet, people can't get enough of his debut single "Chill Bill" and he's about to go on tour with A$AP Ferg and Playboi Carti. Last month, the young San Diego rapper stopped by the HNHH office to give us a blunt-rolling tutorial.

"I feel like I couldn't maintain my life if I didn't smoke weed," $tone told us. These days he smokes exclusively Backwoods and he smiled with glee as he ripped open the Backwoods packaging and emptied out the guts. He talked us through his technique as he rolled up a fat one and mentioned that the first joint he ever rolled was with a sticky note. He has come a long way.
